After a year of waiting since Microsoft first teased the public with the “mythical surface phone,” it will finally be ready for preorder via Microsoft Store for $1,399.
Microsoft’s foldable android phone Microsoft Surface Duo is expected to launch on September 10. This long-awaited Android phone is designed to be the smaller version of the Surface Neo which was first introduced in October of 2019.
Microsoft’s Surface Duo, which has two 5.6-inch displays, will be running Google’s Android operating system and features the best of Microsoft 365. The 4.8mm thin phone will cost $1,399 if it is bought unlocked. According to The Verge, Surface Duo has 128GB of storage, but customers can upgrade to 256GB of built-in storage by paying an additional fee of $100. Surface Duo allows a user to view two apps at once, and drag and drop across screens.
Microsoft has been committed to producing dual-screen devices in the hopes of helping people become more productive everywhere they go, considering anyone can put this phone in their jeans pocket. However, the billion-dollar tech company’s chief product officer Panos Panay said Surface Duo isn’t really considered a phone, a smartphone, nor a “phablet.” “ I think if you’re going to create a new category, you’re going to try to change things, push things forward. The minute you put it in a box, I think you’re lost. So I’ve been pretty resistant to that. Not because it doesn’t act like a great phone,” said Panay last year.
In May, Microsoft unveiled more products in its Surface line of devices like the Surface Go 2 which starts at $399 and the Surface Book 3 that Microsoft described as the most powerful laptop it has ever created.
However, in these challenging times of rising COVID-19 cases that resulted in millions of unemployment in the United States, people will likely have less focus on buying expensive gadgets but would very much get the best of PCs, as more people are forced to work remotely.
Microsoft’s corporate VP Robin Seiler has acknowledged the global change and said “I think that everyone knows that there is quite a bit of uncertainty that is facing us. I do know that we are seeing demand for Windows PCs increase, and for Surface specifically, as people are adjusting to working from home.”
The new Surface Duo is currently available for preorder via the Microsoft Store.
