Originally set to premiere in March of this year, the most recent Disney live-action film gets a new release date. For Disney Plus subscribers, Mulan will debut on September 4 for a premium rental price of $29.99.
Disney Plus will reportedly release the live action film on September 4, the fourth change in its release date so far. It was originally set to be released in theaters on March 27, but due to the outbreak, it was delayed to July 24, then August 21.
Instead of just the theaters, Disney Plus will also be offering the experience of watching the film that was based on the 1998 animated movie to its users. It stars Liu Yifei as the lead Mulan, Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Jason Scott Lee, Gong Li, and Jet Li. Directed by critically acclaimed director Niki Caro, Disney Plus subscribers can get access to the movie for $29.99 on top of the $6.99 subscriber fee. Disney will still have a theatrical release for the movie on the same day in countries where Disney Plus is not available.
Disney Takes a Different Approach to Serve Customers Better
Disney’s CEO, Bob Chapek, said the pandemic has made them try different alternatives for reaching its audience. “We thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring this exceptional family-friendly film to them in a timely manner,” added Chapek.
Disney Plus just surpassed 60.5 million subscribers this week which could help the film earn its target income as if it was exclusively released in cinemas. This move by Disney could also serve as a test to identify how much subscribers are willing to spend on a movie that can be delivered to their homes. Disney also sees this as a chance to lure more consumers into using Disney Plus as more and more people around the world are forced to stay at home.
Disney is one of the many companies that has been brutally affected by the pandemic in which its net loss has exceeded $4 billion in the third quarter of 2020. Its theme parks and resorts – which reopened in some countries to keep revenue flowing – also had less revenue, losing $3.5 billion.
