Big things are bound to happen for Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, as they are set to update the public later this week with regards to their groundbreaking neurological technology.
Though the particulars of the event are up for speculation due to lack of coherent details released by the company, the tech mogul has hinted a few times via his official Twitter account some updates. With the latest announcing the event date which slated on August 28th.
Will show neurons firing in real-time on August 28th. The matrix in the matrix.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 30, 2020
We here have extensively covered Elon Musk and his companies, including Neuralink. Established in mid-2016, it was founded to develop a high-bandwidth, implantable brain-computer interface (BCI). BCI is a type of computer-based system that acquires brain signals, analyzes them, and translates them into commands that are relayed to an output device to carry out the desired action. For the company, it is being able to develop technologies that let the brain communicate directly through an output device to perform the desired action by eliminating other unnecessary hardware interference.
For sure. This is both great & terrifying. Everything we’ve ever sensed or thought has been electrical signals. The early universe was just a soup of quarks & leptons. How did a very small piece of the Universe start to think of itself as sentient?— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 10, 2020
As early as July this year, Musk has answered queries regarding his company’s upcoming Neuralink chip capabilities. He shared that technology will be able to help people with several mental illnesses such as substance abuse and depression. He also shared that the chip will be able to ‘rouse’ the part of the brain which is responsible for pleasure and such – which we believe is related to its capabilities that it can cure depression.
And not only that but for fans of music, the creator also shared that you can use the device to directly stream music to your brain. Talk about Spotify inside your head, am I right?
All of these are BIG news for the medical community but how far is this so-called chip from reality? In a podcast earlier this year with Joe Rogan, Musk shared that it would be ready ‘within a year’. Clinical trials involving humans are not yet performed before but (not that we know of) but the company is trying to work on it behind the scenes.
The company has already invested a significant amount of money and resources in the realization of this type of technology. It was even reported in July 2019 that they have already spent $158 million in funding and consisted of more than 90 employees in its workforce. It’s also been reported that they have assembled a powerhouse team of neurological experts that hail from the best universities in the country. And they are not stopping there and they are continuing to expand their workforce with Elon Musk imploring engineers to join the fray.
All of that just for the company’s vision to eventually establish a symbiotic relationship between humans and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The CEO even shared that they have already devised a way that they can insert such a foreign object inside our brains.
In a report by Dacia J. Ferris for the website Teslarati, the company is expected to include a part in their upcoming Friday presentation an explainer on neuron activity as well as a live demonstration for the crowd’s spectacle.
Will everything happen just as planned? We might witness another faux pas as they did with the Cybertruck but who knows. If it happens, it happens.
