What are the things that your android phones can do? Well, we can list more than a hundred cool things that android devices can do. However, tech giants are still in the roll to integrate new helpful features for smartphones. Would you believe that it can even detect an earthquake now? Well, thanks to Google and its partners.
Earthquakes can leave a tremendous effect on humans. Most of the time, people can’t prepare for the upcoming disaster since there are not enough warnings to let them know that there will be an earthquake. But, with the help of your Android phones, it will send alerts before the shaking arrives.
Google is partnering with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to incorporate earthquake early warnings in Android devices. The warning signals were generated by ShakeAlert to detect shakes before the arrival of an earthquake.
The ShakeAlert feature will be rolled out first in California, where more than 700 seismometers were installed around the state to detect signals. The system was developed by well-known seismologists to help people prepare before the shaking rumbles the place.
Although seismometers can’t be installed around the world as quickly as possible, android users from other places can also use their phones to detect earthquakes nearby or any possible shaking when they search ‘earthquake’ on the devices.
“It’d be great if there were just seismometer-based systems everywhere that could detect earthquakes,” said Marc Stogaitis, Google’s Android software engineer. He continued that it will be a great challenge to acquire seismometers.
“That’s not really practical, and it’s unlikely to have global coverage because seismometers are extremely expensive. They have to be constantly maintained, you need a lot of them in an area to really have a good earthquake early warning signs,” Stogaitis explained.
But, it could still be possible for your android phones to provide early earthquake warning signs even if you’re not in California. Google is planning to make android devices as mini seismometers that will use accelerometers. The installed system will send a signal to their earthquake detection server when your phone detects some shaking.
Google will also give access for your smartphones to toggle information about nearby shakings when you search for the keywords, ‘earthquake near me’, or just ‘earthquake' to show you relevant results.
