It has only been less than a week since Kamala Harris was announced as Joe Biden’s vice-presidential candidate under the Democratic Party. It is still unclear as to how Harris can help in the campaign with the African-American community. With the downfall of the voter count last 2016 to just 59% from the 66% in 2012, Biden and Harris will have to put in more work to secure their lead in the key battleground states.
Around 12% of the total eligible voters in the US are comprised of African-Americans, and their votes are essential in six states that Trump won over back in 2016 - Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Caroline, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
According to the census and election data analysis, the decline in support from the community was able to tip the scales of the 2016 election in Trump’s favor.
If Biden and Harris gain momentum in those states and appeal to the African-American people, they can acquire a large amount of votes, enough to send them up ahead on the polls, particularly in states where hundreds of thousands of African-American votes await to be turned out.
Biden shows weakness in the young generation of voters, specifically the young people of color, whose turnout declined during the Obama administration.
Kamala Harris did not have much of an impact in the said groups, or in any group for that matter, so far this year. However, a recent small-scale poll presented information showing that Biden could benefit from Harris, who is more than twenty years younger than him.
The Democrat vice-presidential candidate was found 4% more favorable among the 18 to 29-year old age range (38% compared to 34%), like Biden who has a 51% favorability rate. In the late 30’s to early 40’s age range, Harris also obtained a 44% favorability percentage, a tad 11% higher than Biden, with a 2% difference (49% from 47%) as seen from an August Battleground poll.
Trump and his team of Republicans have started their usual bashing ever since the announcement.
For now, America is at a state where unity among the diverse races that reside in the country is an utmost necessity. And since the incumbent president makes every effort to destroy the atmosphere of coexistence and peace among the races, Biden and Harris seem to be next best thing for America to have that vital aspect of the nation restored.
