According to Reuters, the House Speaker required all members and staff to adhere to the 'wear face mask' policy as a sign of respect for the health, safety, and well-being of others present in the chamber and surrounding areas. Pelosi is authorized to request removal of any member from the floor, should one insist on violating the policy being imposed. Members will only be allowed to remove their masks when acknowledged to speak in the chamber. To avoid the hassle, masks would be available at entry points to the house members who forget to bring them, adds Pelosi. The house sergeant-at-arms, based on the report, said that all persons entering the House Office Buildings, except those who are eating, drinking, or legally smoking, should wear a face cover.
The mandate came after Republican Representative Louie Gohmert member of the Congress reported positive for the virus- an irony for someone who steadfastly refused and questioned the use of face masks for months.
