No man is an island, the old adage says.
It is undeniable that Tesla is on top of its game. With its status as the most valuable carmaker in the United States, it is, without doubt, the leader in the electric autonomous vehicle (EAV) industry – dominating the market. However, for it to fully realize its dream of an EAV paradise, other companies will need to go towards the path Tesla has taken.
And the company’s CEO Elon Musk is ready to give a helping hand to make that transition happen.
In a very telling tweet Musk shared on his Twitter account, he detailed how the company plans to accelerate the car industry’s move to adopting sustainable energy. This can be done by lending other companies technology developed by Tesla.
Tesla is open to licensing software and supplying powertrains & batteries. We’re just trying to accelerate sustainable energy, not crush competitors!— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 29, 2020
“Tesla is open to licensing software and supplying powertrains & batteries,” he said.
The tech mogul added that they don’t want to derail its competitors but help them instead. This form of help includes the company’s Autopilot software. There are many benefits for the company to take this step. Being able to collect data from non-Tesla users will help in future developments and updates that the company will need to continuously improve it.
This is not the first time the company has expressed its two cents regarding sharing their patented software and technologies to other competitors.
Way back 2018, Tesla has stated that it is open to sharing its Supercharger Network as long as other car manufacturers foot the bill proportional to their users availing its services.
“We’ve always said that this is not intended to be a walled garden, and we’re happy to support other automakers and let them use our Supercharger stations,” Musk was quoted saying on a report on the website Teslarati.
The only competitor that has shown interest in this proposal is Bollinger Motors but Tesla is yet to release a public response to it.
With its position in the market, Tesla is way more capable of performing such undertakings of this level. What would it do? We don’t know either but we should be on the lookout for it.
