Contemporary Amperex Technology or CATL, Tesla’s China-based car battery supplier, has said in an industry conference that it is currently in the process of crafting a new car battery technology aimed to give electric vehicles (EVs) a higher range.
As Teslarati’s Joey Kendler reports, the planned new technology will allow the battery to be placed directly to the car’s chassis. Car batteries of today put the battery cells are put in a large cast enclosing which results in the battery being big and heavy.
The Company’s chairman, Zeng Yuqun, has reported that by adopting this new technology could give an additional 800 kilometers (500 miles) to a regular present-day regular EV’s current range offering. He claims that the said technology is currently in the works and is expected to offer it before the next decade. Other specifics were not divulged during the said conference conducted in Wuhan, China on Wednesday.
CATL’s chairman also said that the company is also looking to diversify its battery unit and not just focus on car batteries. Proposed new ventures include the possible reusing and recycling of battery cells and the creation of new energy storage systems.
What’s in it for Tesla?
The proposed new iterations in the company’s car battery design are seen as a way to make the working relationship of the two companies closer than ever. With the new design proposed to be directly installed to the car’s chassis, this gives the car manufacturer more involvement with the designing stages of a car.
This raises fear as the issue of intellectual property theft conducted by Chinese individuals have been a primary rallying cry of the Whitehouse.
CATL’s plans may come hand in hand with another of the company’s car battery manufacturer, Panasonic, and its plans of increasing the current design’s energy density to up to 20%.
The Chinese car battery company is also working on other technologies as well, including the ‘million-mile capable battery’ for several car companies which according to Chairman Zeng Yuqun is able to last for more than 16 years. This has an estimated mileage of more than one million miles. These companies include Tesla, Daimler, and Volkswagen.
