If Charlize Theron’s tough performance in Mad Max is what you’ve been craving for from Netflix in your homes, “The Old Guard” will quench your thirst for the next 2 hours of streaming.
In this new action film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, our Atomic Blonde leads a group of immortal mercenaries (Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli) as they kick ass for revenge. Not only does it provide satisfying visuals, but it also stars a diverse group of casts, most are probably already familiar in their performances in other genres.
The plot could be a little too familiar for action film fans but this one is delivered in a relatable way, surprisingly filled with honest emotions. And with its plot comes a carefully created group of queer leads that we rarely see in an action-packed film.
Greg Rucka, the mind behind the original comic series, said creating the characters was “done with deliberation, and was done with care,” that the characters that live for so long – well, because they’re immortal – had been raised with prejudices and their additional lives had discarded all of that away. “It was also important to me, very early on, to make it clear that there weren’t ‘conditions’ that had to be fulfilled to have this immortality. You didn’t have to be a straight white guy. That was basically it. The team needed to represent a breadth and depth of diversity. I just didn’t want anybody coming away from the audience, or coming away from the book, going ‘Ah, so it’s a reward for this kind of behavior,’” Rucka added.
Escaping the harsh realities of the ongoing pandemic around the world could start with streaming services, especially now that Netflix’s rivals in the business are releasing hits after hits as well.
