Japanese people know that the wasabi leaves have little use and usually ended being in trash. That’s why the innovation of Hon-Wasabi Tea came into life.

    Do you know what’s surprising? Even if the wasabi is widely known as spicy, Hon-Wasabi is not. The minds behind the products unveiled it on July 9 at the university, highlighting that the newly discovered tea is not spicy that people might think but actually tastes mild.

    What’s more surprising about the wasabi tea is its ‘umami’ taste factor, according to its creators. “Umami” - the fifth flavor, which includes the four other flavors, Japanese pertains to it as the savory taste or yummy.

    One of the Hon-Wasabi tea masterminds is Kazuhiro Yanai, who said that when he brewed the dried leaves of wasabi, the ‘umami’ flavor is in there. Moreover, the result of its component analysis is another factor that the producers are proud of. They found that Wasabi tea has more amino acids and glutamic acid than green tea.

    Yanai’s partner, Kurihime Wakanyaku, located in Shinano, Nagano Prefecture, processes Hon-Wasabi tea. The company holds the responsibility of roasting the leaves to remove the spicy properties of it and balance the tastes, color, and aroma. They get the leaves from a wasabi farm in Azumino, Daio Wasabi Farm.

    It is quite amazing that a simple goal to support wasabi farmers and to prevent wastage of the wasabi leaves resulted in an incredible idea. Great things indeed start with simple dreams and goals.

    Now, wasabi will not only known for its signature spicy flavor but also with its Hon-Wasabi tea that is full of umami.

    It also varies on the age of leaves - hojicha is usually made from older leaves while young leaves are for Sencha. The younger the leaves of tea, the more caffeine content in it.

    If a cup of Sencha has 30mg of caffeine, it is just 7mg for Hojicha, which is why most of the Japanese children also drink hojicha than usual green tea.

    Tea is known to be the healthiest beverage in the world, meaning it is already given that most kinds of teas contain natural elements that enhance our health.

    However, which one is healthier, is it the natural green tea or the roasted one? Well, both of them are healthy, but the process of brewing and producing them made a bit different in terms of the beneficial elements on it.

    Since hojicha has less caffeine, it is healthy for those who need to take less caffeine, especially those with insomnia and high blood pressure.

    However, according to studies, some of the natural properties like antioxidants are reduced when the leaves are roasted. The process is also believed to destroy the catechins present in the green tea leaves.

    Some of us are still able to drink coffee because some coffee industries have survived the economic crisis brought by the pandemic. However, there are other business owners still struggling to continue their coffee-making journey.

    And for the love of coffee, some owners would do anything like staying on a human-sized hamster wheel for 22 days to save their business, literally.

    The founder of Community Bean Coffee, Nathan Stone, had a crazy idea to raise funding for his business. He has a human-sized hamster wheel for powering up a coffee grinder sitting on his shop unmoved, and the brightest idea came to Nathan. “What if he could make thousands of dollars with it?” He probably thought.

    And for the love of his Community Bean, Nathan set up a camera to stream his great genius idea, climbed up the hamster wheel, spent his 22 days just being there. He did the walking, eating, working, and even sleeping on that circular space.

    “I knew no one was going to care about sustainable coffee overnight, hence why the hamster wheel came about,” he said.


    “If I could grind coffee, live-stream the whole thing, and grind it out until they started caring, that was what was going to make an impact.”

    But did he reach his goal? Well, after 300km of infinite walks, he raised a total of $10,445 that would be enough to make his coffee-making business grind to its success again.

    You might still wonder how did Stone make people donate cash on his business by just doing that crazy or maybe genius stuff. One reason could be because the Community Beans brand has been working to achieve sustainability on its every coffee-making process.

    Its founder was also full of ideas in terms of giving back to the Australian community. Stone share to Smart Company that Community Beans will be donating $2 to an Aussie charity for every kilo of coffee sold.

    “One blend sees dollars donated to Foodbank Australia, another directs funds towards a charity dedicated to taking plastics out of the ocean," Smart Company wrote.

    "For the third blend, $2 per kilo goes towards a charity that uses recycled sports equipment to help teach health and fitness skills to underprivileged children including in First Nations communities.”

    Although the company raised more than $10,000 to start rolling the business again, it’s not an easy task to do for Stone as after 22 days, he went to the hospital.

    “In hindsight, I probably could have done it a bit differently, but it was fun,” the founder shared.

    “It was painful ... but here I am, still standing.”

    The painful yet fun experience of Nathan has allowed his business to keep on making a sustainable coffee. He even had a website set up and admin fees using the raised money from that he has worked on for 22 days.
